Ogun LG Poll: Court Nullifies PDP Councillors’ Victory
A High Court sitting in Ilaro Division of Ogun State has nullified the victory of eight councillors of the faction of Mr. Ireti Oniyide of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the July 21 local government elections.
It is recalled that Mr Bayo Dayo-led faction had filed a suit before the court against the caretaker committee believed to be loyal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In her ruling, Justice Mosun Dipeolu annulled the election of the eight councillors and ordered the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to accept the candidates on the list of the Dayo-led state executive of the PDP as the duly elected candidate of the party in the election.
“The list of candidates for the election into the local government councils in Ogun State submitted to the 11th Contemnor (OGSIEC) by officers, organs, members of the first defendant (PDP) other than the applicants is hereby nullified, as the applicants are presently the only authentic executive in Ogun State until their terms of office expire,” the judge ruled.
The court, however, dismissed the prayer of the Dayo faction to commit to prison the Oniyide-led group, including Mr Tunde Oladunjoye and Fasiu Bakenne for contempt of the order of the court.
