THERE is no respite yet for commuters who ply the Third Mainland Bridge on daily basis when going to their places of work on the Island, as fares from the Mainland to the Island have shot up by as high as 200 per cent.

According to findings by the Nigerian Tribune, commercial motorists were cashing on the ensuing traffic gridlock to increase their fares by as much as 200 per cent, as observed in the cost of going to Obalende from Iyana Oworo, which had risen to N150 from the initial price of between N50 and N70.

Also, based on another round of survey carried out by the Nigerian Tribune in the second week of the closure of the bridge, many commuters still spent several hours stranded at some of the bus stops leading to the Island, especially the Iyana Oworo end of the bridge.

Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, one of the stranded commuters, Mrs Ayoola Beatrice, lamented the amount she claimed to have spent, which, according to her, was more than twice the usual amount.

She, therefore, urged the government to come provide palliative measure, through a more organised BRT system.
