THE Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), in Abuja, on Tuesday, elected the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State, Okechukwu Wali,  as its 26th national president, with the total votes of 688 to defeat Emeka Ngige, who polled 449 votes and Blessing Ukiri with two votes.

Declaring the results at about 8.15 p.m, the chairman of the electoral committee, Lanke Odogiyan, declared  Emeka Obegolu as the general secretary, pulling a total of 527 votes to beat  E. A. Haruna and  O. O. Olowokure who came second and third with 322 and 292 votes respectively.

The post of the first vice-president was won by O. J. Irabor with 372 votes, while that of the third vice president was won by Francis Ekwere with 734 votes.

The position of the second vice-president was unopposed.

Also, the post of assistant general secretary went to U. F. O. Nnemeka, with 507 votes, while the position of the welfare secretary was won by Kelvin Ezelonu with 600 votes.

The post of the treasurer went to Joyce Odu, who polled 929 votes, while Afam Obi was elected as the publicity secretary with 626 votes.

Delivering his acceptance speech, the new chairman, on behalf of other elected officers, called on the nation at large to learn from the association’s transparent way of transition from one regime to another.

He called on legal practitioners to cooperate with the new executive council, so as to make the association a better one.

Earlier, the outgoing president of the association, J. B, Daudu, had called on the new elected officers to keep to all their promises.

The swearing-in comes up on August 31.

I want to suggest to our learned men to try and lay a solit foundation for our naccent democracy, I find very disturbing that NBA is adopting delegate election rather than allowing all the lawyers to vote in deciding who become its leaders. if we can conduct a general election in nigeria then the legal proffession should set the pace. pls learned men we want to see u conduct an election where all lawyers in nigeria will participate with transperency so a to show our politicians the path to true democracy. thank u & CONGRATULATION FOR A SUCCESSFUL DELEGATES ELECTIONS.
